The internet based "Stigma Alarm Network", is an email network made up of those with experience with mental illness, family members of the afflicted and professional assistants developed by the Bavarian Anti-Stigma Action BASTA. Through the implementation of SANE, cases of discrimination can quickly and efficiently be addressed.

What SANE does

Through the network, cases of discrimination against the mentally ill can be reported (through emails, letters, faxes or calls).

When through this process a serious case of stigmatization is exposed, BASTA will contact the discriminators and attempt to end the discriminating action (for example, media reports, promotional items, films, advertisements, etc.). If we are unable to accomplish this, all network members will be notified of the incident. Members can then contact the institution directly and protest against the dis

crimination. Through the information contained in the Stigma-Alarm-Newsletter, all subscribers have the possibility to directly contact the institution, company, or responsible person by telephone, letter or email.

This method is based on an Amnesty International concept and has proven very effective in the USA. There, it has been practiced with great success by the organization for the affected, NAMI.

The network depends on the active participation of its members. In order to create a functioning network, it is necessary to inspire many people to participate in the protest. The more active participants the Alarm-network has, the more SANE can make a difference.

Become an active participant in the fight against individual cases of discrimination and recruit more activists. With active 'cream-of-the-crop' members we can contribute to developing a lobby for the mentally ill in our society.
