Project to sensitize police officers to the interaction with mentally ill persons.

For a year now, there has been a new cooperation with the Bavarian Officers Technical College - Department of Police. This institution, as part of a degree course, trains officers for the higher levels of police duties, for example, commanding officers and detectives for the field and criminal police. BASTA has, with the theme 'interaction with social minorities', developed a concept for an anti-stigma seminar with the college's division for sociology.

The contact with police officers can often be, for the afflicted person and his or her family as well as the officers, awkward and demanding. For example, when an acutely mentally ill person must be brought to a clinic against his or her will by a police officer. In some situations, that person and his or her family are confronted with a use of force. The police officers on the other hand are confronted with, and unprepared for an unpredictable threat by the acutely ill person.

For those reasons, BASTA has decided to acquaint police officers, through a project, with mentally illness, and to give them an opportunity to have a personal interaction with an afflicted person and his or her family.
