Flexibly Configured: From Sentence-puzzle to Meeting
The Study Package is divided into four building blocks.

The Sentence-puzzle
The Personal Data Sheets
The Questionnaire ("the interviews")
The Meeting

The learning objectives are oriented on the course curriculum and the structure is problem-/action-/school-oriented - an anti-stigma study package for schools.

The materials are structured so that, with little preparation by the instructors, they can be integrated into the daily lessons. Specifically, the package consists of a sentence-puzzle, personal data sheets, a questionnaire, and a meeting with a person suffering from mental illness and a mental health professional.

The Sentence-puzzle
The sentence-puzzle consists of sentences of varying difficulty that deal with classic prejudices against the mentally ill. With a partner and as a group the students recompose the sentences from the individual words to make meaningful sentences. The sentences are presented and commented upon jointly. In doing so the students, in a hands-on way, are confronted with various views in society regarding the mentally ill.

The Personal Data Sheets Presentation
At this point, the personal data sheets prepared by the mental illness sufferers including their photographs should serve as the basis for a presentation. The data sheets prepared in outline form are, together with a partner or in a group, are worked through and then presented to the class. In this way, the students get a peek into the complexities of the illness and the effects it has on an entire life. They become sensitive to the 'person behind the illness'. Additionally, it gives the teacher the opportunity to issue grades.

The Questionnaire ('the interviews')
Surveying the general population is the third component of the Package. Each student should interview at least one person. The prepared catalog of questions consists of open and closed questions. The Students ask passerby's (for example in the pedestrian zone) or persons in his or her private lives. The Questionnaire poses important questions about schizophrenia and insures by working through the questionnaire for an educational effect by the youth and those surveyed. At completion, the interviewee receives a handout with detailed explanations of each of the questions asked.

The Meeting
This Component - the so-called heart of the Package - provides the personal contact with mental illness sufferers and psychiatric professionals. For this most important component, at least two hours should be planned. The meeting is intended to confront fears of interaction, expand knowledge and encourage tolerance, compassion and respect for people that are different.

The Manual for the Coordinator
The Manual contains instructions for the realization and implementation of the Study Package - The Mentally Ill. These instructions include tips and suggestions for the building of teams for the meetings and the preparation, planning and coordination of the scheduled visits to the class. Questions about the Study Package and to Order Additional Information is available from Ms. Elfreide Scheuring (Projectassistent BASTA).
